Need Respite Care over the Festive Season (and Beyond) ?
How do I get Respite Care?
Do you need a break for a family holiday- or simply for yourself and want to ensure your Loved Ones have proper, supervised care?
Recently, a wise industry colleague Aadil Abbas of Third Horizon Advice shared a very interesting post on LinkedIn, which inspired me to think about the approaching the “Festive Season” from several different angles…
“With the easing of lockdown restrictions across the country, many of us are looking forward to the festive season and the chance to catch up with family, particularly older parents and relatives
But this may also be a time when you notice changes in the lifestyle, health and wellbeing of your ageing parents and relatives, all of which may have been also impacted by lockdown restrictions.
Look out for the below signs as you start to catch up with your elderly parents and relatives:
- Missed appointments
- Unexplained new dents in the car
- House/garden seems neglected
- Forgetting to take medications (My Q: Who IS monitoring that?)
- Loss of interest in activities/hobbies
- Sudden mood swings
Spotting one or more of these clues is not necessarily cause for alarm in itself; it may just be an isolated incident.
But if there are multiple instances of one or more, it may be time to chat to mum or dad or the elderly relative about ‘getting some help around the house’.
The signs of ageing may be distressing and worrying for many people, but they are a natural part of life, especially with our increasing longevity.
The problem is not getting old.
The problem is not having an effective plan for how to grow old.
This plan needs to consider strategies to ensure the home environment and care supports are appropriate, as well as how to fund quality levels of care.
Don’t wait until a crisis has occurred to take action. Planning ahead and professional advice are the keys to quality care and effective decision-making.
The journey may not be easy, and hard decisions may need to be made.
Seeking objective advice from an Accredited Aged Care Professional can help to convert the mountain of data on retirement and aged care into meaningful and relevant information and ultimately into appropriate decisions. “
These past months of lockdown across the states have meant families have been apart for longer than usual.
As you get together over this festive season, you might start to notice your ageing parents and possibly your aunts and uncles, aren’t quite keeping on top of the household duties as they used to.
IF you need a break for a family holiday- or simply for yourself and want to ensure your Loved Ones have proper, supervised care, start looking for solutions now.
Remember, Respite Care bookings often start many months in advance, due to limited places!
